FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions and Answers about Ms. Wendy's Swim Lessons

SHOULD WE, AS PARENTS, PLAN TO STAY FOR THE LESSON AND IF SO, DO WE GET IN THE POOL?

Yes, you should plan to stay because it is important and fun to watch your child learn an important life lesson and skill. Only when requested will a parent be allowed in the pool. Since children who are 2-3 years old are more likely to have separation anxiety, Ms. Wendy asks that the adult bringing the child be prepared to get in the water by wearing a swimsuit each session (unbeknownst to the child). If Ms. Wendy feels it will help the child learn faster and more comfortably, she will ask you to get in the water.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CRIES?

Relax and please understand that almost all children cry initially. In most cases it will stop in 2 or 3 sessions. Children use crying as a form of manipulation during their early years.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CRIES AND SAYS THAT HE/SHE DOESN’T WANT TO SWIM?

First of all, do not ask your child to make that type of decision. You, as the parents/guardian, know what is best for your child. Swimming is a life skill and safety around the water is very important and necessary. You don’t ask your child if they “want” to go to the doctor, school, etc. They will be okay.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO PRIOR TO THE LESSONS TO HELP PREPARE CHILDREN FOR THE SESSION?

More details are found on the Lesson Preparation tab and will be sent prior to the start, but most importantly parents can practice breath control with children during bath time to help them prepare. Since breath control is the first thing the children need to learn to feel comfortable putting their head down in the water, parents can have them practice taking a breath out of the water and then put their face in the water in the bathtub. You can make it into a game where the children hold their breath while you count to 3, then the next time to 4, then 5, etc.

HOW DOES MS. WENDY HANDLE A CLASS OF 15-20 CHILDREN LEARNING TO SWIM AND ENSURE THEIR SAFETY?

While Ms. Wendy teaches classes that have 15-20 students signed up for the session, she NEVER teaches them all at the same time. The days she teaches are broken up into individual time slots and only one child is in the pool with her at a time. This way, each child is able to receive individual and personalized attention.

WILL MY CHILD LEARN TO SWIM IN SEVEN LESSONS?

Yes, without a question. However, just like in any area of education or sport, do not compare your child’s ability to that of others. Some children will learn and swim and be faster than others, may enjoy it more than others, and just “get it” quicker. Your child will undoubtedly learn safety skills very quickly and will also work on building confidence.

WHAT MAKES THIS METHOD WORK?

This method is a no-nonsense approach that is time-tested for over 50 years with thousands of students learning to swim. Ms. Wendy will be in control of all aspects of the learning experience for both students and parents. The lessons are focused and children will usually be tired by the end because they are learning the whole time.

HOW LONG IS THE SESSION?

The session consists of seven lessons over three and a half days. The children receive one-on-one instruction for 10 minute lessons twice a day for the first three days. The last session on the fourth day is a 45 minute group lesson where the parents are in the water with Ms. Wendy and their children.

WHAT ARE THE PAYMENT DETAILS?

The fee for the seven lessons of instruction is $825 per child. There is a $150 non-refundable deposit due online at the time of registration. The balance is due on the first day by cash or check (payable to Swim Safe WW, LLC - please put your child’s name in the memo line).

IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT?

Ms. Wendy teaches children 2 years old and up who have strong legs (strong for running, jumping, kicking, etc.).

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED FOR THE LESSONS?

A swimsuit and a towel is all that is needed. No flotation devices, as they create bad habits by keeping children vertical with their face out of the water. Please do not send masks, goggles, etc. On rare circumstances, Ms. Wendy may recommend goggles. More details will be sent prior to the start, if you register, but no food or drink at least one hour before the lesson, and no sunscreen on the face shortly before the lesson, either.
